avoid the risk of infection.
INTRODUCTION TO MILK:
After colostrum has been fed, introduce the foal to Mare's
Milk Plus®. The foal may be fed from a plastic bowl, baby
bottle, or lamb bottle.
NOTE:
If a nipple is used, make sure the opening is at least ½" wide. If
the foal is not yet drinking from a bowl or bucket, now is a good
time to teach the foal.
Foals will learn to drink quite readily if you place your finger
in their mouth, when they start to suck, raise the bowl or shallow
bucket containing the Mare's Milk Plus® up to the
foal's mouth. Slowly remove your finger from the foal's mouth while
the foal is drinking. If the foal stops drinking, repeat the above
steps until the foal is drinking by himself or herself. Always
bring the milk up to the foal - Do not force the foal's head down
into the bucket. Do not expect the foal to drink within one to
three hours after removal from the mare.
When the foal drinks without assistance, the bucket can be hung
from the stable wall at an appropriate height. The color of the
bucket should contrast with the stall wall, for example; use a
white bucket against a dark wall.
Start feeding your foal slowly, as would happen naturally. Begin
by providing 1/2 the recommended volume from the table above on the
first day and increase gradually over the next 10 days to the
recommended amount.
To do this: divide the total volume by 10 and increase
approximately that much per day until the suggested feeding rate is
accomplished, For example, a foal from a 1000 lb mare should be fed
16 quarts of Mare's milk. On day one offer 8 quarts of Mare's
milk. Increase consumption at a rate of 0.8 quarts per day (8
quarts to reach suggested feeding rate / 10 days = 0.8 quarts per
day) until the 16 quarts are reached. (4 quarts = 1
gallon)
If the stools become loose, reduce the quantity of Mare's
Milk Plus® that you are providing, you are increasing the
amount too fast. If diarrhea persists call your veterinarian.
FREQUENCY OF MIXING:
We recommend mixing a fresh supply of milk every 12 hours; however,
Mare's Milk Plus® can be mixed as a 24-hour
supply. One half can be fed and the other half covered and stored
in a cool place until the next feeding. Additionally, we
recommend feeding every 12 hours to keep the milk clean and to
observe the foal more often. For additional
information, please ask for our technical bulletin "Raising the
Orphan/Rejected Foal".
